In March, dredging work began for the planned expansion of the Cruise Ship dock, a project that will extend the current berthing line by 144 meters, thus allowing the simultaneous stop of two cruise ships up to 300 meters in length.
Throughout these months, work has been carried out in Escombreras on the manufacture of three concrete caissons, 40 m long, 12 m wide and 12.7 m high, which have been towed to the Cruise Ship dock and anchored in their respective locations; the bench has been made and the leveling of this area has been completed.
To complete the work, all that remains is to refloat the crate that is currently in the bow, place it in the correct position, and anchor it again.
The Port of Cartagena has experienced a notable increase in recent years in the number of cruise ship and passenger calls at the Alfonso XII Wharf, with double and triple calls becoming increasingly common. This, combined with the cruise industry's trend towards building ever-larger and longer vessels, led the Cartagena Port Authority to propose this expansion to increase the length of the Cruise Ship Wharf's berthing line.
