Carnival receives permission to begin cruises to Cuba starting next May

Havantur Celimar authorities approved the request from Princess and eight other Carnival brands to begin voyages starting May 1.

The US cruise company Carnival Corp. announced that it will launch its first trip from Miami to Havana next May after obtaining permission from the Cuban government, the first to make the crossing from the United States to the island in 50 years.

“We are ready to take travelers there. This is a historic opportunity, and we know there is a demand among American travelers who want to experience traveling to Cuba,” said Arnold Donald, president of Carnival, in a statement.

Carnival announced its travel plan to Cuba in July of last year, after receiving approval from the U.S. government, but was awaiting Cuban authorization.

The cruises, which are already on sale, will be operated twice a week by the company's new brand, Fathom, which will debut in April with volunteers on vacation to the Dominican Republic.

The trips will be made on the Fathom Adonia, a former P&O Cruises ship, with a capacity of 704 passengers. The announcement was made during President Barack Obama's historic visit to Cuba.
