Tarragona sees an 83% increase in cruise ship passengers

The Port of Tarragona is consolidating its position as a leading Mediterranean cruise destination.
In 2015, 11 cruise ships docked at the Tarragona cruise terminal on the Levante Wharf, carrying a total of 11,600 passengers. These figures represent an 83% increase compared to the previous year, and the forecast for 2016 is even higher.
A member of MedCruise, Tarragona is opting for mid-sized vessels that carry around 2,500 passengers and is considering the construction of a new multi-purpose pier on the Prats Wharf, to be used exclusively for cruise ships in the future.
Almost half of the passengers were British (42%), followed by French (18%) and Italian (15%). Australians and North Americans each accounted for 6% of the total. Cruise activity generated approximately €719,000 in economic impact for the area this year.
Excursions include the city of Tarragona, Montblanc and Poblet, Altafulla, Cambrils and Reus, as well as Barcelona, ​​Port Aventura and visits to wineries, with the "Castellers" being a very popular attraction among visitors.
