The Mediterranean is the world's second most popular cruise destination, contributing significantly to the economy and employment, and boosting the ports and coastal communities that support this activity. While the industry tends to focus on large ports and mega-ships, there is a segment of the cruise sector that operates with medium and small-sized vessels, with companies seeking new
experiences in smaller ports and more exotic tourist destinations. This segment of smaller ports, including Palamós and Roses, is precisely the subject of discussion at the symposium.
The event, which will be inaugurated by the Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Santi Vila, will feature four presentations with a common theme: the important role of small ports in the Mediterranean cruise market. The symposium, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m., is organized by the Government of Catalonia, through the public company Ports de la Generalitat, in collaboration with the Palamós City Council, the Roses City Council, the Costa Brava-Girona Tourist Board, the Palamós Chamber of Commerce, and the Girona Chamber of Commerce.
The key topics to be addressed will be: “The cruise market in the Mediterranean and the Costa Brava”; “The role of small cruise ports in the Mediterranean”; “The cruise industry: A great opportunity for coastal economies”; and “Regional and international cooperation: A key element of success.” Participating entities and companies include the Mediterranean Cruise Ports Association (Medcruise), the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), and the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce (ASCAME); MSC Cruises and Thomson Cruises-Island Escape; the ports of Dubrovnik, French Riviera, and Cagliari; tour operators such as Intercruises, Iberoservice, and BCTours; and entities related to the tourist destination, such as the Costa Brava-Girona Tourist Board and the Network of European Regions Committed to Sustainable Tourism (NECSTouR), among others.
