Just weeks before the unveiling of Quantum of the Seas, the first ship in the Quantum class, which will mark a milestone in the cruise industry with its technological advancements, Royal Caribbean International officially began construction yesterday on the third ship in the class with the cutting of the first piece of steel.
The steel-cutting ceremony for Ovation of the Seas, which will be delivered to the company in the fall of 2016, took place at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, where Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas , and now Ovation of the Seas are being built.
The ships, belonging to the new Quantum Class, which will become the most revolutionary in the industry, boast major innovations such as: robot bartenders in the Bionic Bar; RipCord by iFLY, a skydiving simulator; the North Star, a tower crane that transports passengers more than 90 meters high for breathtaking views; and state-of-the-art entertainment areas, including the largest indoor sports and entertainment complexes at sea with bumper cars, ice skating, and much more. They also feature the largest and most modern staterooms in Royal Caribbean history, including the first virtual balconies
The Quantum class will debut in the fall of 2014 with the Quantum of the Seas, sailing from New York. It will be followed by its sister ship, the Anthem of the Seas, based in Southampton. Each ship will have 16 decks, a gross tonnage of 167,800, a capacity for 4,180 passengers at double occupancy, and 2,090 cabins.
