Ambassador Cruise Line acquires Oceania Sirena and announces its entry into Germany

Ambassador Cruise Line has acquired the Oceania Sirena from Oceania Cruises. The transaction represents a significant step for the company in its goal of becoming the leading European operator of quality cruises at affordable prices for the Silver Ager.

Ambassador Cruise Line acquires Oceania Sirena and announces its entry into GermanyThe acquisition will allow Ambassador to enter the German market, Europe's largest source market for cruises, and launch its own German cruise brand, Ambassador Cruises. The 670-passenger ship will continue to operate under the Oceania Cruises brand until spring 2028 under a leaseback agreement .It will then join the Ambassador fleet under the new name "Ambella."

This opens a new chapter for both the ship and Ambassador's European growth strategy. Starting in the summer of 2028, Ambella will enter service as Ambassador Kreuzfahrten's first ship, offering a distinctive and exclusive adults-only cruise experience specifically designed for the German market.

With Bremerhaven and Kiel as home ports, Ambella will offer an experience entirely in German, personalized service, high-quality gastronomy and destination-focused routes, all based on the quality-at-affordable proposition that is at the heart of the Ambassador brand.

Germany welcomes more than 2.8 million cruise passengers each year, making it Europe's largest source market for cruises. Ambassador believes that Ambella's manageable size, high-quality ambiance, and service-oriented approach make it an attractive proposition for quality-conscious German couples, experienced cruise passengers, and river cruisers looking to explore ocean cruising.

Between May and September 2028, Ambella is scheduled to undertake two repositioning cruises and 11 destination-focused itineraries. The ship will visit ports in Northern Europe and the Baltic, as well as making some voyages to Southern Europe. Thanks to its smaller size, it will offer greater flexibility in itinerary planning and access to ports less suitable for larger cruise ships.

Christian Verhounig, CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line, explains: “The acquisition of Oceania Sirena, its future integration as Ambella, and the launch of Ambassador Kreuzfahrten represent a significant milestone in our journey to establish Ambassador as the leading European operator of quality cruises at affordable prices in the Silver Ager. When we created Ambassador in 2021, we identified a clear gap in the market for an affordable, high-quality cruise experience that is authentic, welcoming, and accessible. We set out to combine the traditions of classic cruising with the standards and expectations of today’s passengers, and this philosophy remains fundamental to our success. Entering the German market with Ambassador Kreuzfahrten represents the next phase of this growth strategy.”

The acquisition of Ambella is the latest step in Ambassador's rapid, yet carefully managed, growth. Ambassador was founded in 2021 and welcomed its first passengers aboard Ambience in April 2022; Ambition followed in 2023.

The integration with the French cruise company Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) in January 2025 allowed the addition of Renaissance to the fleet and significantly strengthened the group's European platform. Ambience and Ambition remain the core of Ambassador's adult-only cruise program, departing from the UK and eliminating the need for air travel.

Renaissance operates during the summer months for the French market and, in winter, participates in Ambassador's Caribbean cruise program, which combines flights and cruises and is aimed at British, French and Dutch passengers.

Following a successful integration phase, CFC was renamed "Ambassador Croisières" on September 15, 2026. In this way, the French division was integrated under the Ambassador umbrella, while maintaining its independent identity and the "French" cruise experience that has become established among passengers embarking in Dunkirk and Marseille.

With this move, the three ships are now united under a single brand, "Ambassador." This is a key step in the group's goal of building a leading European cruise company in the over-50 segment, offering high-quality trips at affordable prices.

The integration has also brought the companies together under a common operational and strategic framework, strengthening the group's financial strength, business capabilities and infrastructure through knowledge sharing, greater economies of scale and closer collaboration between teams, while creating a scalable platform to continue growing across Europe.

The launch of Ambassador Kreuzfahrten represents the next step in this strategy. It creates an offering specifically designed for the German market, building upon the business model and expertise of the companies already part of Ambassador.

Christian Verhounig, CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line, adds: “Our integration with CFC provides us with greater scale, financial stability, and a stronger European platform, while allowing us to preserve the individual character of the markets we serve. For us, growth means building a strong European cruise company that achieves long-term sustainable growth while remaining true to what has made Ambassador successful from the start. Ambella is the right ship, Germany is the right market, and we believe this is the right time to take this exciting step and offer a new generation of over-50s our famously warm welcome at sea, because moments matter.”.

Ambella will become a floating campus for Semester at Sea

In addition to its seasonal program for Ambassador Cruises, Ambella will support a new long-term partnership between Ambassador Cruise Line and the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE), the non-profit organization responsible for Semester at Sea.

Founded in 1963, Semester at Sea offers students the opportunity to combine academic learning with international travel. It uses a passenger ship as a floating campus, visiting destinations around the world.

The program is primarily aimed at students from universities and higher education institutions in the United States, as well as international students. Since its inception, more than 73,000 people have participated.

According to the agreement, Ambella will host the Semester at Sea programs for approximately eight months a year after the German summer season, initially between September 2028 and April 2029. The partnership will initially last for ten years.

Scott Marshall, president and CEO of the Institute for Shipboard Education, stated, “Without a doubt, Ambassador is the right partner and Ambella the right ship to advance the Semester at Sea program in a profound and positive way. Our goals and values align with Ambassador’s. Aboard Ambella, our ambitions for the program can grow even further. I am incredibly excited for the journey to begin in the fall of 2028 with students, faculty, and crew members all ready to embark on the most important educational experience of their lives.”.

Ambassador Crossroads begins in 2026

Additional details about Ambassador Kreuzfahrten's inaugural program for 2028, including Ambella's quality-at-affordable, adults-only proposition, as well as full itineraries, will be announced before the cruises go on sale in the German market in November 2026.

Passengers will be able to book through various distribution channels, including Germany's extensive network of travel agencies, leading online cruise specialists, and directly through Ambassador Kreuzfahrten's own website and customer service center.
