The former Costa Magica passes through the Suez Canal on its way to China

The ship formerly known as Costa Magica, which has completed its European voyage, recently crossed the Suez Canal on its delivery route to its new Asian operator, Tianjin Orient International Cruise Line, marking the beginning of a major transformation for the global cruise industry.

The former Costa Magica passes through the Suez Canal on its way to ChinaThe ship departed Greece on November 19 under the provisional name “Vision” and completed its passage through the Suez Canal on November 25. It is scheduled to undergo a comprehensive refurbishment and be renamed “Ideal” upon arrival in China before commencing regular service from Tianjin in the summer season of 2026.

Built in 2004 by the Fincantieri shipyard for Costa Cruises, this large-capacity cruise ship (approximately 2,720 passengers) was for years a benchmark on routes through the Mediterranean, the Greek islands, and Turkey. After the pandemic, the ship was sold in 2023 to the Greek operator Seajets, which left it docked in Greece. In 2024, it was nominally incorporated into the project of the fledgling cruise line Neonyx Cruises as the “Mykonos Magic” and later as the “Goddess of the Night,” although it never entered regular service.

With its recent sale to Tianjin Orient International Cruise Line, this ship now embarks on a new life in the Asian market, reflecting the growing demand for cruises in China and representing a firm commitment by Chinese operators to the European cruise experience.

The transformation of the former Costa Magica into a cruise ship operated by Tianjin Orient will open luxury routes along the Chinese coast, expanding the cruise offerings in a growing market. The evolution of the global market is driving a geographical redistribution of supply, which benefits both international travelers and the global nautical tourism industry.
