Last Monday, November 10, American Cruise Lines held the christening ceremony for its newest ship, the American Pioneer. With this new vessel, the cruise line's fleet now totals 21 ships. The event coincided with the ship's maiden voyage, part of the new 16-day Grand Florida Coast & Keys itinerary, a journey that allows passengers to explore both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida. For the celebrations, the American Pioneer remained docked at Mallory Square. Key West is also a regular two-day stop on this route, which offers 20 different excursions, including a visit to Dry Tortugas National Park.
The ceremony brought together passengers, local partners, and members of the Key West community. Attendees gathered on the upper deck to witness the official blessing and the traditional bottle christening, followed by a reception in the Sky Lounge. Speakers included Charles B. Robertson, President and CEO of American Cruise Lines, and the ship's godmother, Danise “Dee Dee” Henriquez, Mayor of Key West. This is the second ship for which Mayor Henriquez has served as godmother, having christened the American Legend —one of the line's Coastal Cats—in February 2025.
“It is an honor to celebrate the christening of another of our new ships here in Key West, and it is especially meaningful to have Mayor Henriquez and our first guests with us,” Robertson said during the event.
Designed to offer an intimate experience, the American Pioneer accommodates only 130 passengers. All cabins include a private balcony, and the ship features several lounges and dining options. The cruise line currently has nine other ships under construction, four of which are sister ships to the American Pioneer.
The inaugural voyage of the new 16-day route began on October 31 in Amelia Island, Florida, and concluded on November 15 in St. Petersburg. The company will operate three ships on its exclusive domestic Florida itineraries through April 2026, including the popular 9-day Florida Gulf Coast & Keys cruises, which depart from and return to St. Petersburg.
