The refurbished Borealis has officially returned to service, with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines welcoming its first guests after a major investment in its dry dock maintenance.
The cruise ship, with a capacity for 1,353 passengers, entered the Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR) shipyard on October 21 for a scheduled two-week maintenance program. During this period, the Borealis underwent a comprehensive refurbishment of its interior and exterior. The investment focused on both technical improvements and guest-oriented upgrades, with the aim of enhancing the onboard experience.
Public areas, such as The Observatory and The View, have been renovated, offering a brighter and more inviting atmosphere. The Atlantis Spa onboard has also been enhanced, incorporating new salon equipment, a pedicure chair, and a refurbished Jacuzzi in the Thermal Suite to create an even more relaxing environment for guests. In addition, new freshwater piping systems were installed in several stateroom corridors.
The Neptune Lounge has been upgraded to support Fred. Olsen's new entertainment partnership with RWS Global, scheduled for full launch on board the Borealis on April 30, 2026. Upgrades to stage technology, lighting, and acoustics, along with the addition of new aerial silks, will elevate the shows and enrich the onboard entertainment experience.
One of the most notable transformations is at the Colours & Tastes specialty restaurant. Its premium interiors have been renovated to showcase the restaurant's art collection, creating an upscale dining experience. Starting in 2026, guests can also enjoy a new rotating themed menu featuring Gourmet Grill, traditional Italian cuisine, and popular Asian fusion, offering greater culinary variety during their cruise.
Passengers sailing on Borealis after its dry-dock completion will be the first to discover Fresco, a new outdoor space located aft on Deck 8, part of the ship's upgrades. Designed for relaxation and panoramic views, Fresco will feature a foot bath and an intimate stage for live performances, weather permitting. From February 2026, guests will also be able to enjoy Mediterranean-inspired snacks in this scenic setting.
Operational improvements include the installation of new RFID locks and access cards for the cabins, as well as a new telephone system. The galley has been modernized with energy-efficient equipment, including a new pizza oven, while the laundry has been upgraded to streamline processes and promote more sustainable practices throughout the ship. Several crew cabins were also renovated, along with rest and recreation areas.
Improvements focused on sustainability were also carried out, such as the installation of more efficient propellers to optimize fuel consumption.
The maritime safety and seaworthiness of the Borealis have been officially certified, confirming that the vessel meets the highest standards of structural and technical integrity, as well as respecting international environmental commitments and current national regulations.
More than 920 workers participated in the successful completion of the project.
