The CLIA Spain column

Article from CruisesNews magazine no. 74 – September 2025

CLIAAs usual, the second quarter of the year brings with it the publication of the State of the Cruise Industry report, prepared by CLIA. I would venture to say that it is one of the most anticipated reports for everyone involved in the sector, given the wealth of insights and data it provides; a source of information that helps some of us to bolster our messaging. Because, as we know, figures are powerful allies when it comes to lending rigor to our arguments.

Delving into its more than fifty pages, the chapter addressing forecasts and outlook is particularly noteworthy. In addition to the predicted growth—most pronounced in 2024 and 2025 and largely driven by increased supply—it is especially significant that 82% of those who have already enjoyed a cruise want to sail again. In this regard, Generation X and Millennials are emerging as the most enthusiastic groups. Furthermore, 68% of international tourists are considering a cruise vacation.

These statistics reveal the sector's robust health and confirm the continued strong appetite for sailing the seas aboard a cruise ship. This is a testament to the excellent work cruise lines are doing to promote their offerings (cruise passengers represent approximately 2% of international tourists) and dispel myths that still linger in the public consciousness; to offer attractive itineraries, exceptional cuisine, and a rich entertainment program, among many other aspects. Ultimately, it's about providing an unforgettable experience. As is often said, the best marketing comes from achieving customer satisfaction, something cruise lines are well aware of. In fact, the aforementioned CLIA publication shows that, on a scale of 1 to 5, the cruise passenger satisfaction index is above 4, while other popular vacation options hover around 3.

Another key factor in retaining existing passengers and attracting new ones is that cruises are an ideal option for those who enjoy vacations in multigenerational groups. Approximately 30% of cruise passengers travel with companions from three to five different generations. Their tastes, needs, and interests vary, yet everyone finds their place on board. A cruise allows each member to fully enjoy their vacation, combining activities tailored to their individual preferences with those shared with their companions, all within the convenience of being in the same space.

It is often said that the cruise industry is a sector that always finds a way to overcome crises and face challenges, or in other words, that it is a resilient sector. Facts have proven this to be true. Part of this resilience is rooted in its dynamism; in its ability to expand the range of options available at all levels; in its capacity to evolve its offerings; to set new trends; and to innovate.
