The Board of Directors of the Port of Barcelona has approved the tender for the project to install a new medium-voltage electrical network between the Port substation, currently under construction, and the Adossat wharf. This infrastructure is a key component of the Nexigen Plan, which will allow ships to be supplied with clean energy and shut down their auxiliary engines while moored. This will reduce emissions and improve air quality around the port area.
The Council resolution approved today specifies that the project must include a dual system of medium-voltage (25kV) electricity supply lines. This will allow, on the one hand, redundancy in the distribution network serving the various companies and concessions located on the Adossat dock, and on the other hand, the supply of electricity to the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) connections that will be built at the cruise and ferry terminals. These are two independent lines. One will supply electricity to the OPS at this dock from the Port substation, currently under construction. The second, originating at the Cerdà substation, will power the new terminals at this dock and reinforce the area's supply, which is currently provided by a single point to the north.
The tender, which has a budget of €13,707,689, stipulates that the winning company will be responsible for drafting the technical project and carrying out the work, which will have a term of 23.5 months.
This tender is an essential step in the rollout of the Port of Barcelona's Dock Electrification Plan – the Nexigen Plan – following the Board of Directors' January 2024 award of the contract for the construction of new underground conduits between the Energia and Adossat docks, and the award last November of the contract for the construction of the new electrical substation within the port. Last June, the Board also approved the tender for the installation of the OPS system for Cruise Terminal G, operated by Royal Caribbean. The new medium-voltage electrical network between the Port substation and the Adossat dock was the last major project to be tendered this year as part of the new investment cycle announced by the President of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell, at the beginning of the year, which represents over €332.5 million in projects tendered this year.
This set of tenders corresponds to the Catalunya dock area in its first phase; the fourth phase of the Adossat dock, where the third ferry terminal will be located; the new dock superstructure where the G cruise terminal will be located; the increase in the capacity of the bollards and fenders to provide greater operability, versatility and safety to the berthing of ships; the new berths 34C, 34D and 34E for bulk liquids on the east side of the Energia dock; the construction and commissioning of the first OPS for cruise ships, which will serve the MSC Cruises terminal and the first phase of the access to the Nou Llobregat area, specifically, the execution of the track superstructure that must allow the operation and functioning of the new rail access.
