The Port Authority of Bilbao opens a process of listening and participation to achieve a new model for the Getxo marina and cruise terminal that is more modern, sustainable and shared.
The Port Authority of Bilbao is working on the design of a new, sustainable, and participatory management model for the Getxo marina and cruise terminal. This model is aligned with the metropolitan strategy and the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and is supported by the secretariat of the United Nations Local Coalition 2030 for the implementation and development of the Sustainable Development Goals. The aim is to make Getxo a model for other ports worldwide. The Getxo City Council and other organizations will actively participate in this process, which will include a period of active listening and citizen participation, with the goal of collectively developing the best possible project for its future.
The new port model is designed as an open, modern, sustainable space, fully integrated into the urban life of Getxo. It will also seek to strengthen its role as an economic, port, and social engine, and will do so through cooperation and dialogue. This process is part of the transformation of the Bilbao metropolitan area over the last few decades. It gives it a broad and strategic trajectory and is framed within a vision of territorial development in which the port's transformation catalyzes and contributes to the transformation of the entire region.
The roadmap, entitled “Sustainable Port-City Getxo/Bilbao: Integrated Vision 2030,” encompasses the Getxo marina area and the current cruise terminal, which are part of the State Ports Authority (Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda of the Government of Spain). The Port Authority is thus embarking on a new phase for a more equitable, inclusive, and future-oriented vision for the port, advancing its transformation into a vibrant and open space that combines nautical activity with public enjoyment, local businesses, and integration with the surrounding urban environment.
Forecasts indicate that this project will be structured and defined within a maximum period of two years, although the shared desire of the institutions is to be able to present it sooner.
In the words of the mayor of Getxo, Amaia Agirre, “the institutions are working together to protect what belongs to everyone, and to build a stable and shared future for the Marina and its surroundings. Getxo is now entering an exciting new phase: a more open, more sustainable, and more integrated port, which will be a source of pride for all the residents of Getxo.”.
The president of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Ivan Jimenez, emphasizes that “this process, in partnership with the Getxo City Council, marks the beginning of an ambitious transformation, built on cooperation between institutions and with a strong commitment to the citizens of Getxo and the Bizkaia region. The Port Authority is fully involved in designing a new model for a green and beneficial port for the community, one that combines nautical activity with environmental, economic, and social sustainability within a project that aims to be an international example of port-city integration.”.
For his part, Sébastien Vauzelle, Director of the Secretariat of the United Nations Local 2030 Coalition for the implementation and development of the Sustainable Development Goals, stated: "The Getxo/Bilbao Sustainable Port-City project is an inspiring benchmark for ports and cities around the world through the Local 2030 Hub Euskadi."
