AmaWaterways is partnering with Smithsonian Journeys, and starting in April 2026, select European river cruises will offer exclusive Smithsonian-designed experiences based on the Smithsonian's more than 175-year history in museums, education, and research. These itineraries will feature leading Smithsonian Journeys experts and provide opportunities for local immersion and discovery.
Thirty-three sailings will explore some of Europe’s most stunning and historic rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhône. Each will offer exclusive excursions and opportunities to interact with a variety of experts, from art historians, archaeologists, and scientists to anthropologists, historians, and more. All sailings will include pre- and post-cruise land packages, arranged by an AmaWaterways Cruise Manager, so guests can explore even beyond the cruise itinerary.
“What sets AmaWaterways apart is our commitment to creating truly immersive experiences,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways. “Our goal goes beyond simply visiting destinations: we want our guests to connect with the places we explore. By combining our river cruising expertise with the Smithsonian’s dedication to cultural and educational exploration, we offer travelers a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of local history, traditions, and ways of life, all while enjoying exceptional comfort and service aboard our ships.”.
“We are excited to bring the Smithsonian experience to the great rivers of Europe aboard AmaWaterways ships,” said Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice president of Smithsonian Journeys.
This partnership with Smithsonian Journeys further reinforces the river cruise line's commitment to providing deeply immersive and enriching experiences, both onboard and on shore excursions. AmaWaterways cruises include fine dining in multiple venues, including the signature Chef's Table restaurant, unlimited wines, beers, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, a daily "Sip & Sail" cocktail hour, a variety of small-group excursions, high-speed Wi-Fi, a wellness program with instructor-led fitness classes, airport transfers, and much more.
These new river cruises, ranging from eight to fifteen days in length, will be available to book from February 5, 2025.
