Disney Cruise Line has experienced great growth in recent years and its latest addition has been the debut of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, its new island destination in the Bahamas.
Disney plans to invest $60 billion in its Disney Experiences segment over the next 10 years, which includes Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, in which it has invested between $250 and $400 million to create this destination on the island of Eleuthera.
Environmental impact at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
Disney built and will operate Lookout Cay with the environment in mind. The design called for development on only 16% of the acquired land, and much of that development is designated for low-density uses, such as beach chairs and umbrellas. The cruise line was able to construct a pier extending into deep water, eliminating the need to dredge a ship channel. According to Disney, “the proposed pier location is based on a scientific assessment of the ocean floor to avoid areas with coral reefs. Individual viable corals within the pier footprint were expertly relocated to improve the health of the area’s struggling coral reefs.”.
As for consumers, visitors strolling through Lighthouse Point will find no plastic products on the island. This is part of Disney's commitment to zero waste. The private destination will feature edible straws instead of plastic straws as part of this promise. There are also elevated walkways that cruise ship passengers can use to move around the destination without disturbing the flora and fauna of Disney Lookout Cay.
