The city and borough of Juneau and the cruise lines that call at the port have signed an agreement to help manage the volume of visitors from the sector in the capital.
The agreement sets a limit of 16,000 under-dock landings per day, with 12,000 on Saturdays, and also includes a commitment to meet annually to optimize the schedule, review visitor numbers and discuss community goals.
Negotiated by the city and borough of Juneau and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) in Alaska, the latest agreement is said to be based on recommendations set by the Visitors Industry Working Group in 2021 and encourages collaboration between the parties.
“The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and increase our tourism capacity to create a great experience for guests and reduce the impact on residents,” said Juneau Tourism Industry Director Alexandra Pierce.
“With this agreement, we commit to setting a cap to manage our busiest days and meeting annually to ensure our visitor numbers remain sustainable. This is hard work, time-consuming, and extremely important for our community. We thank the partners who have helped us get here,” he added.
The daily thresholds acknowledge the need to preserve the experience of residents and visitors, according to the City and Borough of Juneau, and provide a predictable market for the many local businesses that rely on the cruise industry.
It also demonstrates the partnership and collaboration between the community and the industry, as they work together to maintain a sustainable visitor industry in Juneau and Southeast Alaska.
“This latest agreement reflects the industry’s ongoing commitment to working with the CBJ and Juneau residents to establish mutually beneficial partnerships. Cruise lines have committed to working closely with the community, and the city’s leadership has been instrumental in maintaining a dialogue that fosters solutions to the issues raised by the VITF,” stated Renée Limoge Reeve, CLIA Vice President of Government and Community Relations.
“We have listened to the community's concerns and will continue to work with Juneau to improve the experience for residents and visitors alike“.
