Marella Cruises and Cleaner Seas Group have announced the launch of the industry's first microplastic filter initiative on board the Marella Explorer.
Marella installed two INDIKON filters in the crew laundry system of the Marella Explorer for a six-month trial period to prevent plastic microfibers from affecting marine ecosystems.
The washing machine filter, designed by Cleaner Seas Group, can be installed in existing washing machines to capture microplastics from the machine's wastewater.
In collaboration with the University of Surrey, the company will monitor and measure the microplastics captured on board the vessel.
Olivia Wells, Head of Sustainability at Marella Cruises, stated: “We are committed to finding ways to continue caring for the natural environment in which our ships sail. By collaborating with Cleaner Seas Group during this six-month trial, a pioneering initiative in the industry, we believe it will support future studies on ocean conservation and protection.”

The cruise company will examine the trial results before implementing the INDIKON filters across its entire fleet: Marella Discovery, Marella Discovery 2, Marella Explorer, Marella Explorer 2 and the new Marella Voyager.
