From July of last year to April of this year, 1.6 million cruise passengers have visited the province of Las Palmas , representing an increase of 12% compared to the previous season.
“The cruise sector is growing worldwide and we are noticing this in all ports,” noted the president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, who added: “The province of Las Palmas ranks second in cruise tourism at the national level, which highlights the importance of this sector in our region.”
Beatriz Calzada stated that this season's figures are positive, with cruise passengers increasing from approximately 1.4 million in the 2022-2023 season to 1.6 million this season. "Furthermore, cruise lines are changing the concept of the cruise, which means fewer port calls but with a higher number of passengers," she said.
In this regard, he explained that shipping companies primarily use the ports of the province of Las Palmas as ports of call, adding: “Being a port of call is usually more attractive for cruise lines. However, there are other companies, such as MSC, that have chosen the Port of Las Palmas as their home port, with a cruise that tours the Canary Islands.”
Regarding the cruise passenger profile, the majority come from Germany, followed by the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, France, and Spain. “These are tourists who spend money and, therefore, contribute to our local economy. At the same time, their time is spread out across the destination, meaning they visit different areas of the city or island, where they typically spend a day,” according to Calzada.
It's worth noting that forecasts for the upcoming season point to an increase of around 10%. “Cruise passengers visiting us this winter will also enjoy the opening of the new, more efficient and sustainable cruise terminals, which we will be inaugurating as construction is completed. We will also be offering these passengers improved services, which will in turn enhance the tourist experience in our destination,” stated the president.
