After being delivered by the Meyer Turku shipyard in late November, the Icon of the Seas is being prepared to set sail on its maiden commercial voyage on January 27, 2024.
Built in Finland, the Icon left Europe at the beginning of last December and is currently headed to the port of Ponce, in Puerto Rico, for a technical visit.
While preparing to welcome its first guests, the 5,610-seat ship also visited Cadiz, Spain, where it entered one of the dry docks at the Navantia shipyard.
During its stay at the facilities, the LNG-powered vessel received more than 10,000 plants and trees, which will become part of its Central Park area.
The Icon also underwent technical work during its dry dock, including upgrades to its box refrigerators and sea chests, and repairs to one of its azipods.
The Icon of the Seas, which takes the title of world's largest cruise ship from its fleetmate, the Wonder of the Seas, is the first of a new series of ships that also includes the Star of the Seas and an as-yet-unnamed sister ship.
The ship introduces several new features to the Royal Caribbean fleet, including an attraction similar to a ropes course where passengers will hang 154 feet above the ocean.
Other features of the Icon of the Seas include the new AquaDome, a multi-purpose enclosed space that offers a selection of bars and restaurants, plus a water theater and a multi-level waterfall.
Sailing from PortMiami year-round, the Icon of the Seas will offer a series of week-long cruises to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, with ports of call including Cozumel, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and “Perfect Day at CocoCay”.
