The new Balearic president, Marga Prohens, has met with the national director of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), Alfredo Serrano, and in this meeting the desire to encourage the arrival of more ships and expand the number of moorings in Palma in the low season months has been confirmed.
Current regulations allow a maximum of three cruise ships per day to dock in the port of Palma, of which only one may have more than 10,000 passengers on board.
At the meeting, which also included the Balearic Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzà, it was decided to maintain the program already agreed for the 2023-2024 season, but it is being considered that from 2025 onwards, more boats may arrive in spring, autumn and winter.
The government of Marga Prohens stated in a press release that the meeting opened a space for dialogue with the sector to defend cruise tourism due to its impact on commerce, restaurants and other sectors.
The CLIA director highlighted the trend towards less seasonality in the sector, noting that "the season is getting longer and there are more and more ships operating year-round in the Mediterranean." In the case of the port of Palma, "the peak seasons are April and May, and October and November.".
