Together with the Port of Aarhus, AIDA Cruises celebrated the opening of the first shore power facility for cruise ships on June 20, 2023. The AIDAmar was successfully supplied with shore power and is now in regular operation. AIDA Cruises had previously supported its Danish partner in preparations for the commissioning of the newly constructed facility.

“We were the first cruise line to start using onshore power in Europe! We have proven that we keep our word, which we gave to our partners at Cruise Baltic in 2022, and we are pleased that our ships can now also use onshore power in a Danish port,” says AIDA President Felix Eichhorn.
AIDA Cruises has been considering the use of shore power in the planning and construction of its ships since 2004. Since 2021, AIDA ships have also been able to use shore power from renewable sources in Kiel and Rostock-Warnemünde.
AIDA Cruises has been investing in a sustainable and future-proof cruise market for many years as part of its Green Cruising strategy. In addition to using low-emission liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a key bridging technology, AIDA Cruises is expanding its use of alternative energy sources, such as shore power and batteries, to operate its ships. Together with several partners, the cruise company is working intensively on other solutions, including the use of fuel cells and regenerative and synthetic fuels in the future, and is evaluating various technologies for implementation.
