The managing director of Puertos Canarios, Manuel Ortega, said, “Together we have made possible a project that has been completed within the established deadlines, all while navigating a pandemic. The port has seen its berthing lines increased by 660 meters between the two basins, in addition to this new eco-sustainable passenger terminal, which boasts 1,800 square meters with an air recycling system that ensures a pleasant atmosphere year-round.”.
The Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing, Sebastián Franquis, has stated that “this Friday a dream comes true, betting on sustainability, accessibility and especially on the safety of the port.”.
The councilor also mentioned Fuerteventura, noting that the Ministry's efforts to modernize and improve ports are ongoing. Our goal now is to update and incorporate quality, safety, and sustainability into the port of Corralejo, which we are inaugurating today on the other side of the maritime highway between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, wanted to emphasize that “this project helps to put Lanzarote and Fuerteventura on the international tourist map”
The project began in 2017 with a budget exceeding €45 million and involved reorganizing the existing basin and expanding the facilities with a new southern breakwater to separate passenger ships from recreational and fishing vessels. The new breakwater allows the outer basin to accommodate three slipways with lengths of 300 meters, 142 meters, and 100 meters, and one 75-meter deep-water berth. The berths include over 11,000 square meters of service areas.
One of the main attractions of the new port is the eco-sustainable terminal, which, in addition to being an open space that takes advantage of natural air currents for ventilation without the need for air conditioning, also follows the island's prevailing aesthetic, respecting the legacy of César Manrique. At the same time, it offers passengers, tourists, and shipping company personnel a modern and bright terminal that will contribute to the development of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The new terminal occupies 1,800 square meters and will house two retail spaces, nine offices, restrooms, and a restaurant.
The port will also have 155 new berths for sports boats and there will be two parking areas, one with 85 spaces in the marina area, and one adjacent to the new terminal with space for another 190 vehicles.
