Explora Journeys has appointed Diego Michelozzi as second-in-command of EXPLORA I, the first of six ships that will make up the fleet of the MSC Group's new luxury cruise brand, which will begin operations in 2023. The company already announced earlier this year the appointment of Captain Serena Melani, who will alternate with Captain Diego Michelozzi to command the first ship in the Explora Journeys fleet.
Diego Michelozzi has been a captain on a luxury cruise line for the past two and a half years. He has over 20 years of experience with major cruise lines, in addition to having served in the Italian Navy.
Michael Ungerer, Chief Executive Officer of Explora Journeys, said: “Captain Michelozzi will guide EXPLORA I to both well-known and lesser-known destinations around the world, thanks to his experience, passion for exploration, and respect for the ocean and nature, which aligns with our own. We are delighted to welcome him aboard as we continue to gain momentum and prepare for the maiden voyage of EXPLORA I.”
Captain Michelozzi added: “It is an honor for me to join Explora Journeys and play a role in bringing the family’s vision and perspective to life. Born on the coast of Tuscany, Italy, I come from four generations of seafarers and, naturally, I value the company’s commitment to preserving the fascinating beauty of our oceans and marine life.”
Captain Michelozzi studied at the Artiglio nautical school in Italy, in addition to holding an art degree from the University of Phoenix (United States), a diploma in leadership and management from the University of Kent (United Kingdom) and an MBA from Arden University in Coventry, also in the United Kingdom.
During its first 12 months, EXPLORA I will visit 138 ports in more than 40 countries. Itineraries will range from a six-night cruise to a 44-night Grand Cruise through Northern Europe.
