AmaWaterways celebrated the christening of its newest ship, AmaLucia, in a ceremony in Rüdesheim, Germany, on Sunday, July 31. AmaWaterways co-founders President Rudi Schreiner and Executive Vice President Kristin Karst joined godparents Will and Riley Farmer, sons of AmaWaterways business partner Colin Farmer, to commemorate the newest addition to its fleet of 26 river cruise ships.
“We always look to the future, and it’s very fitting that this new ship is being named after Will and Riley Farmer, two wonderful representatives of the next generation of river cruising,” said Karst. “Their love of travel, their openness to change, and their respect for cultural diversity embody the values of AmaWaterways.”
The guests enjoyed live music and, following an ancient tradition associated with ship christenings that dates back more than 4,000 years, the godparents threw a bottle of champagne against the hull of the AmaLucia, as a sign of good luck for the upcoming voyages.
After the christening and dinner, the attendees enjoyed a party on deck with live music by David Onka, AmaWaterways' corporate musician.
Schreiner said: “We are proud that AmaLucia has joined 19 other ships in our European fleet to receive the Green Award certification and we are committed to finding innovative ways to continue moving towards even greater sustainability as we lead the way in new destinations such as Colombia by 2024.”
AmaLucia offers 78 luxurious staterooms, most of which feature double balconies, allowing guests to enjoy panoramic views and plenty of fresh air during their voyages. Other amenities include a walking track on the sun deck, a swimming pool with a swim-up bar, a fitness center, complimentary bicycles, a beauty salon and massage services, and, of course, the exquisite cuisine served in the main restaurant and the signature Chef's Table, featuring regionally inspired dishes and complimentary hand-selected wines.
The AmaLucia, sister ship to the AmaSiena, AmaLea, and AmaKristina, sails between Amsterdam and Basel on seven-night itineraries along the Rhine River. From 2023, the AmaLucia will also sail on the waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium.
