The Port Authority of Bilbao has received more than 14 million euros from the European Union to move forward with its long-awaited onshore energy.
Bilbao is considered a central port of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and the project will facilitate a common shore power supply (OPS) infrastructure throughout the port area. It will include a photovoltaic (solar) plant and 14 OPS connection points, including the cruise ship, ferry, and container docks.
The project is expected to be completed in 2025, in time for the 2026 cruise season.
Cruise Director Gloria Frau commented: “We are delighted with this outcome and very grateful for the written support of MSC Cruises, Carnival UK, TUI Cruises and Royal Caribbean, which has contributed to the funding.”.
This is just one of the numerous projects the port has launched in recent years. The Bilbao (OPS) project joins other projects that include a 20 MW wind farm and a gas refueling station, which are already operational, and a hydrogen and e-fuel plant that will be ready in 2024.
These projects are complementary and offer shipping companies a range of options and services regarding alternative fuels for the future. They position the Port of Bilbao at the forefront of meeting the objectives set by the EU.
This puts the Port of Bilbao at the forefront of meeting the EU's target of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 and, as we move forward, closer to meeting the EU's "Fit For 55" targets by reducing its GHG emissions by 40%.
