Cruise Copenhagen celebrates its 30th anniversary with sustainable initiatives in the cruise sector

On May 24, 2022, CruiseCopenhagen's members met at their Annual General Meeting to celebrate 30 years of cruising. Although the cruise industry has faced
restrictions and closures during the pandemic, CruiseCopenhagen has worked throughout this time to improve and implement changes to become more sustainable, avoid overcrowding in cities, and increase the number of cruise passengers in Danish ports.

“Thirty years is a milestone worth celebrating. I am proud of everything we have achieved during this time. We have succeeded in making Denmark a renowned cruise destination, positioning Copenhagen as the leading cruise port in the Baltic Sea region, and developing the other cruise ports in Denmark,” says Claus Bødker, Director of CruiseCopenhagen.

In 2022, Cruise Copenhagen expects 326 port calls in Copenhagen and 592 total port calls in Denmark. As a result of the cruise network's sustainability efforts and the promotion of the off-season, Cruise Copenhagen anticipates a cruise season with port calls in every winter and autumn month for the first time.

“Time and again, we have shown that we are a strong business and we take responsibility for sustainable development and a sustainable future,” says Claus Bødker, director of CruiseCopenhagen.

CruiseCopenhagen is involved in the following initiatives to increase tourism in Copenhagen, promote the off-season, implement shore power supply, and attract expedition cruises:

  • Transform Copenhagen into a year-round cruise destination by promoting activities during the off-season and winter.
  • Avoid congestion and overcrowding by promoting activities outside the center of Copenhagen.
  • Promotion of Copenhagen and other Danish ports for expedition cruises, due to the smaller size of the ships and their interest in port calls during the winter months.
  • Using shore power to reduce air pollution from cruise ship port calls. Shore power will be available in Aarhus in 2023 and in Copenhagen in 2024.
  • Inspiring cruise guests to adopt sustainable behavior and promoting sustainable travel offers.
  • Dialogue with the inhabitants of Copenhagen in order to involve them in the future work and development of the cruise industry in the city.
