The delegation from the Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) is currently engaged in a busy schedule at Seatrade Cruises Global Miami to ensure that the construction plan for the new cruise terminals in the ports of Las Palmas, Puerto del Rosario, and Arrecife will not interfere with the quality of service for ships and their passengers. This project, scheduled to become operational in October 2024, will strengthen Las Palmas' position during the winter seasons.
The president of the APLP, Luis Ibarra, heads the delegation, which also includes the director, Francisco Trujillo, and the Commercial Chief, Juan Francisco Martín, as well as various representatives of the port community.
Ibarra explains that “it is crucial to maintain the confidence of operators based in Las Palmas, which is achieved with a direct explanation at the highest level of the operations in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.”.
The construction plan stipulates that cruise operations will not be affected. To this end, an extensive work schedule has been established to guarantee quality service for the ships and their passengers, minimizing major construction work during the winter season and concentrating it in the off-season months. The ships Anthem of the Seas and Ventura will close the 2021-22 cruise season in Las Palmas on May 11, at which point preparations for the start of the works will begin.
During the winter seasons of 2022-23 and 2023-24, temporary structures will be enabled to provide services, with all four terminals in the three ports becoming fully operational in October 2024, at the start of the 2024-25 season.
In November 2021, the Port Authority of Las Palmas awarded the 'Tender for the construction and operation, under a public domain concession, of the public cruise passenger terminals in the ports of Las Palmas, Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario' to Global Ports Canary Islands SL.
The new public cruise passenger terminal at the Port of Las Palmas, together with the cruise facilities at the Port of Arrecife and the Port of Puerto del Rosario, will be operated under an open regime for general cruise passenger traffic (public terminal).
The Port Authority of Las Palmas has implemented over the last decade an investment program aimed at maintaining its position in the cruise sector and ensuring its development in an environment of traffic growth, larger ship sizes and improvements in other competing ports.
