The repair and conversion of cruise ships at Navantia Cádiz generates 10 million euros a year in the naval industry of the province, can employ up to 5,000 people per ship and in the ten years that the cruise ship repair business has been running at Navantia, 90 ocean liners from twenty different companies have passed through the factory.
These are some of the main conclusions of the conference on the economic impact of cruises on the naval industry, held in Cadiz under the organization of the Port Authority of the Bay of Cadiz (APBC) and Suncruise Andalusia.
In these ten years, the cruise ship activity at Navantia has generated 7 million hours of work, with 86 cruise ships, with reliability in deadlines, in addition to the human and technical capacity to respond to complex projects in tight deadlines, being the great support and the main calling card of Navantia in the sector.
As highlighted by the president of the APBC, Teófila Martínez: “It is evident that in the last 25 years an industry has been built around cruise ships, from tourism to repair, including commerce, supplies, transport, catering, hospitality, auxiliary industry, etc. and that has as its common thread specialization, knowledge and excellence.”.
The Government Delegate of the Junta in Cádiz, Ana Mestre, has highlighted that “it is important to emphasize how Cádiz is positioning itself as the main province of the naval sector not only in Andalusia but in the rest of Spain.”.
For her part, the regional delegate for Tourism of the Junta in Cádiz, María Jesús Herencia, pointed out at the closing of the event that "the cruise segment is one of those that presents the greatest expectations in our community.".
The important work of associations such as CLIA has also been discussed, as well as the role of Cadiz in this sector, being the 5th port nationally in terms of port calls.
