Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that pop artist and “American Idol” judge Katy Perry will be the godmother of its newest and most innovative ship, the Norwegian Prima, which will debut in August 2022.
As godmother, Perry will not only fulfill the long maritime tradition of blessing and officially naming the Norwegian Prima, but she will also perform during the christening ceremony just before the Norwegian Prima sets sail on its maiden voyage from Reykjavík, Iceland, where it will debut as the first cruise ship christened in the Icelandic capital.
Appointing a godmother for a ship is a fundamental nautical tradition at any launch. It is a deeply rooted and respected custom that dates back centuries. During the ceremony, the chosen godmother officiates, breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow of the ship to bring good luck to the vessel and its passengers.
“We are thrilled to welcome Katy Perry as godmother of Norwegian Prima,” said Harry Sommer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “We are so proud to have her as part of the Norwegian Cruise Line family and can’t wait to christen our ship with her this August,” he concluded.
“My favorite family vacation is sailing the seas,” says Katy Perry. “I’m thrilled to be christening the Norwegian Prima and can’t wait for this cutting-edge designer ship to set sail and start providing unforgettable vacations for so many families.”
To commemorate this collaboration and celebrate the top entertainment artists who will be performing on the Norwegian Prima, NCL has created a Spotify playlist.
Beginning in August 2022, the Norwegian Prima will offer inaugural voyages to Northern Europe from Southampton, England; Amsterdam; and Reykjavík, Iceland; departures to Bermuda from New York City beginning October 6; and Caribbean itineraries from Galveston, Texas, and Miami beginning October 27.
