The Spirit of Adventure ship, consigned by Pérez & CIA and owned by the Saga shipping company, docked today at the Maritime Station on its first visit to the region.
The cruise ship, measuring 236 meters in length and 31.2 meters in beam, was launched from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany last year. Although its maximum capacity is 1,000 passengers, only 800, mostly British, have visited Cantabria due to COVID restrictions. The Spirit of Adventure also arrived in port with 550 crew members.
To celebrate its first stop in Santander, the director of the Port Authority, Santiago Díaz Fraile, and the Councillor for Tourism of the City of Santander, Miriam Díaz, presented the captain, Franko Papic, with a commemorative plaque and some books about Santander and Cantabria for the onboard library.
The Spirit of Adventure, a luxury cruise ship offering some of the largest suites in the industry, entered the port at eight in the morning, coming from Le Verdon (France) and is scheduled to depart for Leixões (Portugal) at five in the afternoon.
A significant portion of the cruise passengers on this ship are taking advantage of their stay in Cantabria to make excursions to Santander and Santillana.
To organize port calls and promote cruise tourism, the Port Authority of Santander (APS), the Government of Cantabria, and the Santander City Council have created the Santander Cruise Deluxe brand. The goal is to attract new cruise ship traffic to the region. In the case of the Spirit of Adventure, the City Council is contributing maps and support staff, while the Regional Government is hiring a group of pipers and tambourine players to welcome the cruise passengers.
