Las Palmas de Gran Canaria officially opened its cruise season yesterday, Sunday, October 3rd. The Port of Las Palmas welcomed the Celebrity Silhouette, the first of these large cruise ships to call at the city in October, marking the start of the season. The arrival of the cruise passengers activated the Cruise Ship Terminal Information Point as well as the Tourist Bus service.
The Councillor for Tourism, Pedro Quevedo, noted that "after a very difficult period of the pandemic, the return of cruise ships to the city is news to celebrate. The sight of the cruise ships at the dock and of cruise passengers strolling along our beaches and streets gives an image of a return to normality and a clear, optimistic message: the city is back on its feet.".
According to the season's forecast, Santa Catalina Pier will receive calls from the Celebrity Silhouette as well as 12 other cruise ships. On Friday, October 15, the Celebrity Apex and the Iona will arrive, both making their first call; on Saturday the 16th, the Regal Princess will dock, and on Sunday the 17th, the Silver Spirit. The Spirit of Discovery will make its first call from Funchal on Thursday the 21st; and on Sunday the 24th, the Sea Cloud Spirit, embarking passengers, will join the Celebrity Silhouette at the pier.
The Queen Elizabeth, a regular visitor to the Port of Las Palmas, and the Bolette, from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, are scheduled to arrive during the last week of October, on Monday the 25th. The Borealis, also from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, will arrive on Tuesday the 26th, followed by two cruise ships from Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrtenen: the Europa 2 on Wednesday the 27th and the Hanseatic Inspiration on Thursday the 28th, making its first port of call. The Jewel of the Seas, from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and the Seabourn Ovation, making its first port of call, will close out the October schedule on Sunday the 31st.
With the start of the cruise season, shopping centers and areas will be able to open their doors on Sundays until April 30, 2022.
