MedCruise and AIVP have created a new joint Working Group focused on sustainable relationships between port cities and cruise lines. The aim is to reflect on and share best practices that can facilitate better coexistence between port cities and cruise ships. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal operations of cruise lines, preventing the sector from operating worldwide. This is also an opportunity that both organizations want to seize to strengthen their cooperation and help their members overcome this difficult period and plan for a more sustainable future.

The new Working Group is an important step in the collaboration between the two organizations. Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2021, AIVP and MedCruise have established a dialogue on key issues related to cruise ships and port cities. Both organizations are convinced that it is necessary to work together to find a balance between port activities, cruise ships, and the aspirations of citizens. The new Working Group will create a benchmark of current best practices developed worldwide that can contribute to improving the relationship between port cities, citizens, and sustainable cruises. The group will also identify current challenges and risks that may hinder the implementation of these best practices. Another objective of the group will be to discuss sustainable approaches to tourism and cruise markets in port cities and to improve dialogue with local governments, lobby groups, NGOs, national bodies, and other stakeholders involved in the cruise-port city relationship.
