The Minister for Business, Tourism, Transport and Port has announced that Gibraltar is now ready to welcome back cruise ships, their passengers, and crew. The Port of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Tourist Board have continued to work proactively throughout the pandemic to support the cruise industry. MedCruise recognized these efforts at the Association's second annual awards, naming Gibraltar the "Western Mediterranean MedCruise Port that has shown the greatest commitment during the pandemic.".
Daryanani commented: “Following the implementation of the necessary safety protocols, I am pleased to announce that Gibraltar is now ready to welcome cruise ships again. I have been discussing the resumption of cruise ship calls with industry executives for some time, and we have worked to ensure that we can make this happen. Local shore excursion operators and maritime agents are also ready to continue their excellent work. In addition, the cruise lines have done an impressive job in carrying out onboard testing and checks, which will form part of their protocols,” he noted.
“Gibraltar offers many advantages for cruise itineraries, with excellent port facilities and a wide range of shore excursions. The port’s proximity to the city center is a major benefit, as it minimizes transit time for passengers to enjoy the destination. Thanks to the UK government’s management, Gibraltar’s population is fully vaccinated, making us one of the safest destinations in Europe to travel to today,” he added.
In addition to the many physical protocols that will remain in place, passengers and crew will be able to disembark in Gibraltar and visit the destination provided they have a valid PCR or lateral flow test taken up to 72 hours before arrival.
“I have contacted all the cruise lines that normally stop in Gibraltar, as well as others I would like to attract or welcome back, to let them know that we are open again. I am firmly committed to recovering this important source of income for our tourism, distribution, leisure, and hospitality sectors, and we are eager to welcome cruise ships, passengers, and crews back to Gibraltar,” Daryanani concluded.
