After eight years, 10 months, and four weeks of operation, totaling 3,254 days, the ship that launched the TUI Cruises brand is leaving its fleet. TUI bid farewell to the Mein Schiff 1 last week, after it had been part of the company from May 15, 2009, to April 11, 2018.
The ship, with a capacity for 1,924 passengers, originally belonged to Celebrity Cruises under the name Galaxy. It was built at the Meyer Werft shipyards and began service in 1996, before being transferred to TUI in 2009. TUI christened the ship in Hamburg eight years ago, launching the German brand at that time with the artist Ina Muller as godmother.
The Mein Schiff 1's last port of call was Palma de Mallorca. From that point on, the ship was transferred to Marella Cruises and will undergo a refurbishment over the next month to better serve the company's British customers.
The new Mein Schiff 1 will join the TUI Cruises fleet next May, ushering in a new era of ships, as the new vessel built by Meyer-Turku will have a capacity for 2,900 guests.
