The Mexican hotel group Vidanta, owner of several high-end hotels and golf courses mostly located in the Riviera Maya, has chosen the Navantia repair factory in Cadiz to convert a number of newly acquired ships into luxury cruise ships.
The first order will be for the Vidanta Alegría, which has been moored at Navantia for two weeks now, awaiting the finalization of the refurbishment project, which, according to Diario de Cádiz, could cost up to 40 million euros per ship. This newspaper also reports that the Mexican group plans to invest in three or four more ships.
Apparently, this is the first time the Vidanta Group has invested in Europe. The Vidanta Alegría arrived in the Bay of Cádiz about three weeks ago and its stay could last for more than six months, possibly until May, as the plan is to practically empty the ship and build a luxury resort inside, in the style of the hotels owned by this group.
The Vidanta Alegría is a cruise ship built 27 years ago and has already been renamed multiple times (it was born as Crown Monarch and became Alexander Humboldt and the last name it was known by was Voyager).
