MSC Cruises has formally requested a concession from the Port of Barcelona to build and manage a cruise terminal, which would be designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill.
The concession request is for a space located on the Adosado Wharf and for a period of 30 years. The Port of Barcelona plans to begin processing this request shortly.
With this project, MSC Cruises aims to increase its percentage of homeport passengers—those who begin and end their cruise in Barcelona and therefore make a greater economic contribution to the city. The company proposes that many cruise passengers who currently only make a day stop in the city could become homeport passengers thanks to the facilities offered by the new terminal, which is expected to open in 2021.
