Malaga was present at the biennial trade fair for the cruise sector in the Mediterranean, 'Seatrade Med', held in Tenerife between September 21 and 23.
Presence at the fair
The Malaga delegation, made up of representatives from the Port Authority, the Tourism Area of the City Council of the capital, Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol, the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía and the company Cruceros Málaga, fulfilled a broad work agenda at the Andalucía Cruises stand, together with the rest of the ports of the region.
The Port of Malaga was also represented at the State Ports stand, along with other Spanish ports that were promoted during the event.
Meetings and other activities during the fair
The Malaga delegation held meetings with representatives of the main cruise lines and other professionals in the sector, during which they presented their latest developments regarding port services and the destination's offerings.
In this regard, the outlook for cruise ship traffic in the coming years is very positive: the Port of Malaga has 289 confirmed calls in 2017, representing a 16% increase compared to the current year. Furthermore, the expectation for 2018 is to continue this upward trend, with an increase in homeport traffic, meaning ships that begin and/or end their itineraries within the port area.
On the other hand, the delegation held several meetings with the ports of Miami, Lisbon, Tangier, and Tenerife to strengthen collaboration and develop new itineraries in our area of influence. In fact, during the trade fair, the presidents of the port authorities of Málaga and Tenerife, Paulino Plata and Ricardo Melchior, signed an agreement to explore the creation of Atlantic routes that could attract cruise lines and thus overcome seasonality.
