Eight cruise ships have simultaneously called at the port of Palma during their Mediterranean voyages. These include the Meisschiff 4 (coming from Ibiza), AIDACara, Thomson Majesty, Costa Fascinosa, Norwegian Jade, Costa Diadema, Royal Clipper (coming from Ibiza and heading to Mahón), and MSC Fantasia.
This convergence of cruise ships highlights the Balearic Islands' growing position as a key destination for cruise lines, thanks to the commitment of the Balearic Port Authority (APB) and the islands' institutions to promoting cruise tourism. In the words of the APB's president, Joan Gual de Torrella, "We are pleased to see all our hard work rewarded in promoting a type of tourism product that diversifies the Balearic Islands' overall tourism offerings. This record number of cruise ships won't be repeated for many more days, but it demonstrates that this product has proven successful.".
The pace at the port of Palma is very high, but operations are proceeding normally as the facilities are prepared to handle the arrival of cruise ships and their passengers.
“Overcrowding is a possibility, and we understand that, respecting that it's a municipal matter. But it's a situation occurring in a very specific neighborhood of Palma, and it benefits the rest of the island. Cruise ship passengers don't just go to the old town; they spread out across Palma and Mallorca because they take excursions all over the island. It would be a mistake to think that limiting tourists will benefit us,” stated Joan Gual, who has offered his assistance to the city council to help resolve this issue.
