The Walt Disney Company has announced plans to build two new cruise ships, each featuring the immersive family entertainment, charm, and unparalleled service that only Disney can offer.
The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Meyer Werft shipyards in Germany, under which the ships would be available in 2021 and 2023.
“We are proud of the unforgettable vacation experiences we provide to our guests every day, and the expansion of our fleet will allow us to create even more magical moments for families at sea and in incredible cruise destinations around the world,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company.
Each new ship will be approximately 135,000 gross tons, slightly larger than the sister ships Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, and will have about 1,250 staterooms. The design, names, and itineraries are currently under development, although the Disney team is already working on new ways to create the most magical adventures at sea.
Since its first cruises in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has offered the quintessential family vacation experience, combining Disney magic with the excitement of exploring different parts of the world. The company has also spearheaded innovations that have spread throughout the industry, such as virtual portholes in interior staterooms.
“The expansion of Disney Cruise Line adds to our excitement for the unprecedented growth taking place at our vacation destinations, from the new Star Wars experiences we will be implementing at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts, to the 25th anniversary of Disneyland Paris and the opening of our new Shanghai Disney Resort park,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
