Since Monday, May 11, 2015, the check-in process for cruise passengers has been underway at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. This initiative, which will run until October 30, allows cruise passengers to check their luggage in the Intermodal Hall of Terminal T1, which has been designated solely for this purpose.
Air France-KLM, British Airways, and Iberia have 14 dedicated check-in counters in this area for passengers arriving in Barcelona on cruises and continuing their journeys by plane. The airport also activates security checkpoints in the regional flights and air shuttle area to expedite access to the boarding area.
On the other hand, passengers arriving at the Port of Barcelona who have requested this service have access to special coaches that take them directly to the Intermodal Terminal of the Airport along with their luggage. BC Tours and Intercruises are responsible for managing this service for Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises.
Assistance for People with Reduced Mobility:
The operations for cruise passengers also include assistance for People with Reduced Mobility (PRM). In the Intermodal Hall, there is a staffed desk available to assist passengers at all times.
The PRM assistance service consists of accompanying the passenger during the check-in process and security checks, to their seat on the plane. Upon arrival at their destination, they are assisted with disembarking and collecting their luggage at the agreed-upon location.
2014 Statistics:
Last year, approximately 15,550 cruise passengers used the special check-in service at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. June and August were the busiest months, with 3,364 and 3,813 passengers, respectively.
Regarding baggage, 13,755 suitcases were processed, again with June and August being the busiest months, the former with 3,029 and the latter with 3,393. All bags were checked in at the 14 counters located in the Intermodal Hall of Terminal 1.
Operational since 2008
The collaboration between port and airport began in 2008 when Delta offered a check-in service at the dock to cruise passengers arriving in Barcelona and then flying to the United States.
Back in 2010, with Terminal T1 in operation, the check-in procedure for cruise passengers was expanded by enabling the airport's Intermodal Hall for users arriving by ship and then departing by plane.
