The city of Torrevieja will debut next September as a cruise stop with a vessel with capacity for 620 passengers (mostly Germans) and 200 crew members.
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, the councilor for Tourism, Luis María Pizana, and the delegate in Alicante and head of operations of the maritime transport company 'Pérez y Cía', David Fernández, made this announcement today and highlighted that this is the first time the city has received a tourist cruise ship with passengers.
The ship “Amadea”, owned by the German shipping company 'Phoenix Reisen' and with a capacity for 620 passengers - mostly of German nationality - and 200 crew members, will arrive in Torrevieja on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 from Tangier (Morocco) to stay in the city between 4 and 11 p.m. and, later, set course for Palma de Mallorca.
As the mayor explained, this cruise ship plans to anchor at the port entrance, opposite the Levante breakwater, and then transfer passengers to land using the ship's own two medium-sized boats, each with a capacity of 100 people.
This medium-sized cruise ship, 200 meters long, will depart from the German port of Bremerhaven and its final destination will be the French town of Nice, after a 15-day journey.
David Fernández, the head of the shipping agency, expressed the "interest" of both his company and the city council to continue collaborating so that the city can be part of a cruise circuit annually.
He announced that the arrival in Torrevieja of the cruise ship 'Albatros', from the same shipping company but larger in size and with a capacity for about 800 passengers, has already been arranged for 2016.
Following this announcement, the organizers and those in charge, led by the mayor, moved to the municipal tourism office on the Vista Alegre promenade to meet with representatives of the town's three nautical clubs, members of APYMECO, and business owners and tourism service institutions in Torrevieja to launch an "attractive" tourism product for the city to offer to the 600 visitors.
The mayor has encouraged all tourism sectors in the city to offer their "best products" so that Torrevieja can "consolidate itself as a Mediterranean cruise destination".
