All the celebrations promise to be spectacular.
Cunard, the British cruise line, will celebrate its 175th anniversary in 2015. It was on July 4, 1840, that the Britannia departed Liverpool to cross the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, embarking on the first voyage in its history to Canada and the USA. Since then, many ships have sailed from Europe to America each year. This year, in homage to the Britannia, the Queen Mary 2 will depart from the same port, following the same route and on the same date. Before arriving in New York, it will stop in Halifax, the birthplace of Samuel Cunard. This commemorative cruise will feature gala dinners and scheduled events on land, the highlight of the 175th anniversary.
On May 7, 1915, in Cobh, Ireland, a German torpedo struck the starboard side of the Lusitania. The Lusitania was one of 22 Cunard ships lost during the First World War in the conflict zone, thus becoming a symbol, not only for its size, but also because its sinking marked a turning point in public opinion against Germany. As is fitting, the Queen Victoria is paying tribute to this "Floating Palace" on the 100th anniversary of its sinking. The ceremony will take place on May 3, 2015, in Cobh, coinciding with the start of the 175th anniversary celebrations.
The celebrations will continue on May 25, 2015, when three of its ships— the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria , and Queen Mary 2—will reunite in Liverpool. This is a unique and unrepeatable opportunity to see all three ships together again and pay tribute to the city from which they departed. Further celebrations are planned but will not be revealed until later.
