The working group has had broad participation from institutions and companies interested in this field.
On the 12th, Málagaport held a working committee meeting, promoted by the Port Authority, regarding cruise traffic and with the participation of the port community, as well as other companies and institutions interested in this area of business.
Participation success
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Port Authority, shipping agents, tour operators, representatives from the Malaga City Council's Tourism Department, the Malaga-Costa del Sol Tourism Board, the Chamber of Commerce, Malaga Cruises, and the University of Malaga, among others, with the aim of sharing needs and strategies to strengthen and consolidate this market in the city and its province, as well as generating new business opportunities.
Activity during the day
The working day consisted of an evaluation of the current situation of the cruise sector (from a global, national, regional, local perspective) and the subsequent preparation of a diagnosis, ending in the creation of a series of objectives and strategies that will help to put into practice the new Action Plan of the entity, in relation to cruise traffic.
Goals
- Increase the number of cruise ship calls.
- Increase the number of stops at the base (start and end of the itinerary).
- Breaking the seasonality by increasing the number of stops during the winter.
- Increase the level of spending by cruise passengers at the destination.
Strategies
– Improvement of the marketing work of the port and the city as a cruise destination, by reviewing the different ways of contacting the representatives of the shipping companies, as well as reviewing the corresponding promotional material and organizing visits to the port area and the destination.
– Improvement of public-private cooperation in the development of the sector.
– Ongoing updates to the market research.
– Implementation of measures aimed at environmental sustainability in the cruise market.
This action is part of the Malagaport Action Plan for 2014-2015, which has been divided into four working committees (cruise ships, cargo, port community and port-city relations), with the aim of meeting market needs, generating business opportunities and integrating the port environment with urban spaces.
