Emilio Brogueira was received by the president of the Port Authority to discuss joint initiatives that will be formalized in an agreement to be signed by both entities.
A Coruña and Porto are strategic allies in the cruise sector, having experienced significant growth in recent years and sharing the common goal of establishing themselves as leading destinations on Atlantic routes.
The President of the Port Authority of A Coruña, Enrique Losada, received the President of the Port of Porto, Emilio Brogueira Dias, this morning. Mr. Brogueira visited the A Coruña port facilities to explore avenues for collaboration in the cruise sector and to learn about the existing services and resources. The ports of A Coruña and Porto share common interests regarding this type of traffic, and both are currently undergoing a process of growth and development with the aim of consolidating their position as leading Atlantic destinations.
This visit follows a recent one by the mayor of A Coruña, Carlos Negreira, to the Portuguese city, where, among other topics, he discussed with the president of the Port of Porto the possibilities for joint work. This will result in a collaboration agreement with the port of A Coruña to share experiences, know-how, and synergies. The objective is to advance the development of cruise traffic in the Atlantic market and formalize the cooperation framework between two strategic allies that have grown significantly in recent years. Currently, the port facilities of Porto, located in Leixões, are considered the second largest in Portugal. Furthermore, the construction of its new cruise terminal is nearing completion.
Regarding traffic, the Portuguese port expects to break its record for port calls this year, reaching around 80 dockings and 85,000 passengers. A Coruña, for its part, maintains its leading position among Cantabrian-Atlantic ports in terms of port calls. Following the excellent results achieved in 2013, with more than 157,000 passengers, it is expected to maintain around 100 port calls this year.
In his meeting with Emilio Brogueira, the president of the Port Authority of A Coruña highlighted the strategic importance of the alliance with the Port of Porto for the development of two major destinations, which frequently share routes for numerous shipping lines. Bearing these common objectives in mind, Enrique Losada emphasized that the agreement with Porto “will be a new impetus for continued growth and for leveraging the development potential of the cruise sector in our respective cities, maximizing the benefits of consolidating Atlantic routes as an alternative to the Mediterranean.” In this regard, he noted that the joint actions undertaken within the framework of this agreement will be “fundamental in contributing to the increase in international tourist arrivals and boosting our local economies.”.
