Companies and institutions present in the port or in its area of influence have until October 31st to submit their applications.
The Port Authority of Cartagena maintains a firm commitment to reconciling port development with respect for the environment. Therefore, all processes related to port activity are carried out under the guidelines of an Environmental Management System, certified by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, in accordance with the UNE EN ISO 14001:2004 standard. Furthermore, the Port of Cartagena adheres to the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 EMAS), a voluntary environmental management and audit scheme established by the EU as the highest standard for transparency and public participation in companies' environmental management, aimed at achieving continuous improvement in environmental performance.
Taking a further step towards the sustainability of port activity is a priority objective. Therefore, the Port of Cartagena wants to reward business and research initiatives that contribute to improving port management and making it more environmentally friendly, through an ideas competition that seeks to encourage innovation and creativity in environmental matters. The competition includes two award categories. Category A is aimed at companies operating in the port and its surrounding area. In this category, the award is a public recognition and does not include any financial compensation. Category B is aimed at groups, associations, and individuals linked to the university and/or research sectors, and the prize in this case is €3,000.
The competition categories are held every two years, and began in 2010. The last edition was held in category B, and Pablo Carbonell Alonso and Francisco Cascales García were awarded for their project “Anti-Light Pollution Disc”, while an honorable mention was given to Paola Siljeström Galiana for her project “For a Very Clean Port”.
The application period for the 2014 edition, category A, is now open. This category is aimed at companies located in the port and its surrounding area, who can submit proposals for projects that are already implemented and fully operational. The deadline for submitting applications for this edition is October 31st.
