From coast to coast and bow to stern, Explorer of the Seas will sail the Eastern Mediterranean with a fresh new look in the summer of 2020. The cruise line has announced details of the ship's upcoming $110 million revitalization, which will include Royal Caribbean passengers' favorite activities and spaces. Guests can embark on historical adventures ashore and enjoy new thrills, flavors, and views from the deck, including the Perfect Storm duo of waterslides; Giovanni's Italian Kitchen, a traveler favorite; a redesigned resort-style pool with the signature Lime & Coconut bar; and completely transformed spaces for children and teens.
Starting May 7, 2020, the Explorer of the Seas, the first revitalized ship sailing from Rome (Civitacecchia), will offer 7 and 9 night itineraries to visit the best of Italy and the Greek Islands, from Santorini to Mykonos or Crete.
Unforgettable adventures
Passengers will enjoy a new view from the upper decks of Explorer of the Seas. Adventures of all kinds and for every traveler will join Royal Caribbean's iconic offerings, such as the FlowRider surf simulator, an indoor sports court for basketball, soccer, or volleyball, a rock-climbing wall, and a mini-golf course.
The most noteworthy experiences are:
- The Perfect Storm, the popular duo of water slides, boasts three stories of height, perfect for enjoying adventure and getting your adrenaline pumping. Plus, riders can compete to be the fastest in an incredible race with twists, turns, and unforgettable views on the Cyclone and Typhoon slides.
- A revamped, Caribbean-inspired water park makes it the perfect place to relax under the sun or stars, with a wide range of seating, sunbeds, and hammocks. In addition, those who wish to enjoy an exclusive adults-only area can unwind and relax in a newly renovated solarium.
- The Lime & Coconut, Royal Caribbean's new exclusive poolside bar, offers live music, a selection of varied cocktails, and a rooftop terrace to enjoy the extraordinary panoramic view.

Passengers will be able to savor flavors from around the world aboard Explorer of the Seas. Royal Caribbean will expand its diverse selection of restaurants, bars, and lounges, which already includes Izumi's Asian cuisine, the popular American steakhouse Chops Grille, the Boleros Latin lounge, the Schooner Bar, and many more. New offerings include:
- Giovanni's Italian Kitchen, the cruise line's signature Italian restaurant, is a new take on the iconic Italian restaurant. The reimagined trattoria will welcome passengers in a relaxed atmosphere, offering classic dishes with a contemporary twist. From freshly made, hand-crafted pizzas straight from the oven to delectable charcuterie, the extensive menu allows guests to complete their Sunday best with a wide selection of wines and limoncello from Italy's most renowned regions.
- Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcadeis the place to enjoy the best matches while supporting the local team in an incredible space with 52 televisions. It will offer an extensive menu with typical bar favorites with a special twist, ice-cold beers, all kinds of games—classics, trivia, tournaments, and pool— and the Owner's Box VIP area.
- Johnny Rockets Express is making its way poolside with the favorite American offering that now includes milkshakes.
- On board there is also a Starbucks, with its exclusive menu featuring classic sweets and drinks.
More ways to play
Activities and entertainment on the Explorer of the Seas will take center stage, from a new laser tag experience to a completely renovated space dedicated to children and teenagers.
The most noteworthy experiences are:
- Glow-in-the-dark laser tag debuts at Studio B, a space that also doubles as an ice rink and hosts incredible shows. Royal Caribbean's latest challenge, Clash for the Crystal City, pits two clans, the Yetis and the Snowshifters, against each other in their final showdown to escape extinction.
- The new Adventure Ocean will come to life after a major redesign. The award-winning program for younger passengers and families features a new open and imaginative design with fantastic and immersive activities. Children aged 6 to 12 can choose their own adventure, while babies and children aged 3 to 5 enjoy spaces specially designed for them.
- An exclusive teen venue with a completely new look and features, including the latest in movies, video games and music, and the addition of a private outdoor terrace.
During its stay in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Explorer of the Seas will join the already revitalized Allure of the Seas, the iconic Oasis-class ship sailing the Western Mediterranean from Barcelona. Royal Caribbean will experience its strongest season in Europe to date in the summer of 2020, as two of its refurbished ships sail simultaneously to destinations brimming with culture, history, and adventure.
Once the Explorer of the Seas completes its European season, it will set sail for the Caribbean.
