Naha Port Authority, Cruise Port Naha GK, Royal Caribbean Group and MSC Cruises celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for a new cruise terminal in Naha Port, a significant milestone for the continued growth of the cruise industry in Japan and the East Asian region.
Cruise Port Naha GK is a joint venture between CTL Maritime and RCL Cruises Ltd., representing the interests of MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group, respectively. Under the agreement for the creation of the cruise hub signed with the Naha Port Authority in August 2026, Cruise Port Naha GK will be responsible for the development and operation of the new terminal, which is scheduled for completion and commissioning in March 2028.
The new terminal will feature modern facilities specifically designed for cruise traffic, with the aim of improving the passenger experience, increasing operational efficiency, and supporting the long-term growth of cruise tourism in Okinawa.
As one of Japan's most strategically located ports, Naha offers year-round access and serves as an ideal gateway for cruise itineraries in the region. Once completed, the new terminal will feature enhanced passenger facilities and strengthen the port's capacity to accommodate some of the world's most advanced cruise ships. This will help increase passenger capacity and meet the growing demand for cruise vacations in Asia.
“For Royal Caribbean Group, Japan is one of the most important cruise markets in Asia, not only as a destination, but also as a long-term partner within our global business. We don’t just bring passengers here; we also invest in the country, and with Naha Okinawa, we are investing in infrastructure that will benefit the local community for many years to come,” said Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group.
"The future of cruises in Japan depends on shared ambition, collaboration and responsible innovation, and we are proud to be part of this project.".
"Okinawa occupies a privileged position at the confluence of some of Asia's most attractive cruise destinations and we see great potential for its future," said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group's Cruise Division.
“This project is part of our long-term vision to expand our presence in the region and create new opportunities for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys passengers to enjoy Asia year-round. As we continue to develop our itineraries and invest in infrastructure, we are making cruising more accessible to both international and Asian travelers, while strengthening connections throughout the region.”.
“We are proud to partner with Royal Caribbean Group and Naha Port Authority to bring this vision to life, and I want to thank everyone whose commitment, collaboration, and shared ambition have made this milestone possible. Together, we are not just investing in a port, but also in the future growth of cruise tourism in Okinawa and across Asia.”.
The project comes after Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism designated the port of Naha in 2019 as a site for the development of an international cruise hub. The new terminal also represents a significant example of public-private partnership aimed at boosting the long-term development of tourism in Okinawa.
Today's ceremony included a traditional Japanese event at the site of the future terminal, officially marking the start of construction. The event brought together various institutional representatives, including the Governor of Okinawa, Genta Koja, as well as representatives from the Japanese Cabinet Office, along with representatives from Naha Port Authority, Cruise Port Naha GK, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Group.
