The Port of Tarragona has welcomed the inaugural call of the Viking Yi Dun, the first Viking Ocean Cruises ship designed to operate Mediterranean itineraries exclusively for the Chinese market. The ship's arrival marks a significant step in the cruise line's strategy to bring this destination closer to one of the fastest-growing source markets in the cruise industry.
The stopover was accompanied by an institutional event attended by the president of the Port Authority of Tarragona, Santiago J. Castellà; the mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales; the consul general of China in Barcelona, Meng Yuhong; representatives of local administrations and executives of Viking Ocean Cruises.
The choice of Tarragona as the port for this first Mediterranean stop reinforces the company's commitment to the destination and consolidates the Catalan city's position within the premium cruise segment. For the 2026 season, Viking Ocean Cruises has scheduled 17 calls in Tarragona, with a projected 34,800 passengers, compared to three calls and approximately 5,000 passengers in 2025.
The president of the Port of Tarragona, Santiago J. Castellà, highlighted that this stopover "represents a milestone that transcends the arrival of a new cruise ship," as it reinforces the port's international positioning and demonstrates the confidence that Viking places in Tarragona to develop future projects.
For her part, the Director of Business Development at the Port of Tarragona, Genoveva Climent, noted that both organizations are working on exploring long-term collaboration opportunities to further develop the shipping company's presence in the port, with a shared vision based on quality, sustainability and integration between the port and the city.
To mark this first stop, the passengers of the Viking Yi Dun were welcomed with a human tower display by the Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls, who built several human towers next to the Balears dock. The performance offered visitors a first glimpse into Catalan culture, in line with the port's strategy of promoting authentic experiences linked to the region's heritage, gastronomy, and identity.
This philosophy aligns with Viking's value proposition, a shipping company specializing in cultural and high-end cruises that seeks to offer its passengers greater contact with the destinations visited.
The arrival of the Viking Yi Dun also highlights the growth of the premium segment in Tarragona. Of the 81 port calls scheduled for the 2026 season, 45 will be high-end cruise ships, representing a 40.6% increase compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, Viking's commitment to the destination extends beyond conventional port calls. Six of its calls will include an overnight stay in port and two days in Tarragona, while four will include two nights and three days in the city, giving passengers more time to explore the Costa Daurada and fostering a greater economic impact on the destination.
With this strategy, Tarragona continues to consolidate itself as one of the leading boutique ports in the Mediterranean for the premium segment, reinforcing a growth model based on the quality of the experience and the integration between cruise activity and the territory.
