NYK Line has confirmed the construction of a new luxury cruise ship to replace the iconic Asuka II, thereby reinforcing its long-term commitment to the growth of cruise tourism in Japan and consolidating the Asuka brand as a benchmark in the country’s premium segment.
The planned investment will exceed $600 million and will enable the company to expand its fleet of luxury cruise ships, which recently entered a new phase with the addition of the Asuka III, built by Meyer Werft and delivered in 2025.
The new ship will take over from the Asuka II, NYK Cruises’ flagship since 2006 and considered one of the cornerstones of the development of Japan’s modern cruise industry. Originally built in 1990 for Crystal Cruises at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard, the ship was added to the Asuka Cruises fleet following an extensive refurbishment and has since carried thousands of passengers on luxury itineraries throughout Asia and other international destinations.
With a gross tonnage of 50,412 metric tons and a capacity for 940 passengers, the Asuka II remains one of the most recognizable ships in the Japanese market. However, after nearly two decades of service with NYK and more than 35 years since its construction, its propulsion systems and other technical components are beginning to show signs of obsolescence, which has prompted the decision to develop a next-generation replacement.
Although the cruise line has not yet disclosed the technical specifications, capacity, or dimensions of the future ship, it has confirmed that it will operate alongside the Asuka III, thereby expanding the range of high-end cruise offerings and meeting the growing interest in this type of experience among both Japanese and international travelers.
The order for the new ship is not expected to be finalized before April 2028, and both the shipyard and the final specifications will be determined at a later stage of the project.
The addition of the new ship will ensure the continuity of the Asuka brand, while increasing the company's operational capacity and enhancing its competitiveness in the domestic luxury cruise market.
The announcement represents one of the largest recent investments in the Japanese cruise industry and reflects NYK Line's confidence in the sustained growth of maritime tourism, both domestically and internationally.
The company is also involved in other strategic projects for the industry. Notable among these is its collaboration with Oriental Land, the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, to develop Disney’s future cruise division in Japan. As part of this agreement, Oriental Land is building a 140,000-metric-ton Wish-class ship, which Meyer Werft is scheduled to deliver by the end of 2028. NYK will provide consulting services, as well as technical and operational management, for this new company.
With this strategy, NYK Line reaffirms its commitment to building a modern fleet capable of meeting the growing demand for luxury cruises, while maintaining the excellence in service that has defined the Asuka brand for decades.
