The autonomous city of Melilla has experienced an unprecedented day in its recent history with the simultaneous port calls of two international cruise ships, the Norwegian Dawn and the Azamara Quest, bringing more than 4,300 people, including passengers and crew. This event marks a decisive step in establishing the destination on the Mediterranean cruise map.
The arrival of both ships in the port of Melilla marks the first time the city has hosted two vessels of this type at the same time, putting its logistical and hospitality capacity to the test as it welcomes a significant number of visitors in a single day.
Local institutions have given the operation very positive reviews. The president of the Autonomous City, Juan José Imbroda, has highlighted the strategic nature of this double port call, emphasizing that it marks a turning point for Melilla’s positioning as a cruise destination. In this regard, he has praised the coordination among government agencies, businesses, and the local community to ensure a satisfying experience for visitors.
For his part, the president of the Port Authority, Manuel Ángel Quevedo, highlighted the technical and operational significance of the event. Both ships docked at the Northeast 2 and Northeast 3 piers, the latter of which was recently upgraded to accommodate large cruise ships. In fact, the Norwegian Dawn is now the largest ship to have operated at the port to date, both in terms of size and capacity.
The infrastructure improvements made have been key to the success of the event. These include the installation of new mooring systems, the refurbishment of passenger areas, shaded areas, and reception areas, as well as a logistical reorganization that has facilitated both the disembarkation of cruise passengers and their transportation to the city center and the various scheduled excursions.
The economic impact of this double port call has been equally significant. It is estimated that around 3,000 passengers had the opportunity to explore Melilla, enjoy its cultural offerings, shop at local businesses, and sample its cuisine. To accommodate this influx, a special plan was put in place that included tourist information booths, cultural activities, street markets, and extended hours at retail and hospitality establishments.
In addition, the event served to showcase Melilla’s tourism potential, which combines attractions such as its ideal climate, beaches, Modernist heritage, fortified sites, and a diverse and unique cultural identity.
