MedCruise promotes sustainability, innovation and economic value in the Mediterranean with three strategic projects

The Mediterranean Cruise Ports Association (MedCruise) is making steady progress in its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and value creation in the cruise industry. It is currently developing three key projects that reflect its role as a driver of transformation for ports and destinations in the Mediterranean and surrounding areas: an analysis of the economic impact of cruise tourism, the Blue Community digital initiative, and an international study on the impact of cruise tourism on destinations.

Measuring the value of cruise tourism in local economies

The first project, Economic Impact Assessments, is led by Lorenzo Vera, commercial director of the Port Authority of Motril and a member of the board of directors of MedCruise. Its objective is to evaluate the socioeconomic impact of cruise tourism on the association's member destinations.

The study analyzes direct spending by cruise lines, passengers, and crew, as well as job creation and the added value generated by this activity. Through this research, MedCruise aims to provide a clear view of how cruises contribute to regional development and how they can do so sustainably, involving local communities and fostering opportunities for balanced growth.

Blue Community: Digital transformation arrives at cruise ports

The second project, Blue Community, is coordinated by Luz Marina Espiau, Head of Commercial and Business Development at the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and member of the MedCruise board in charge of Digitalization and Innovation.

This initiative drives digital transformation among member ports, promoting a shared culture based on data, operational efficiency, and collaboration. Blue Community encourages the use of digital tools to optimize processes, improve port management, and enrich the visitor experience. In this way, MedCruise reinforces its role as a collaborative network that helps its partners meet the technological challenges of the future.

A common European approach to more sustainable tourism

The third project, Impact of Cruise Tourism on Destinations, is the result of a joint survey by MedCruise, Cruise Europe, Cruise Baltic, Cruise Britain, and Cruise Norway. The study analyzes the economic, social, and environmental effects of cruise tourism on various European destinations.

Among its key findings, the report highlights that, although cruise ship passengers represent less than 10% of total tourist arrivals, they generate significant local spending and contribute substantially to employment and the revenue of local businesses. Furthermore, 40% of destinations have implemented measures to diversify tourism and reduce pressure on historic city centers, thus promoting a more equitable distribution of benefits.

The report also highlights the growing commitment to sustainability: the implementation of shore power supply (SPS) systems, environmental taxes, and digital management tools. A particularly relevant finding is that 97% of residents maintain a positive perception of cruise tourism, reinforcing the social value of this sector when managed responsibly.

With these three projects, MedCruise consolidates its leadership in promoting smarter, more sustainable and connected cruise tourism, demonstrating that collaboration between ports, institutions and local communities is essential for the future of the Mediterranean.
